Corrupted Cognition 77

Corrupted Cognition 77 is part of the Corrupted Cognition projects latest drop of 20 pieces, 61 to Eight O, initially exclusively available as Satellite Art Show during Art Basel.

Corrupted Cognition is a collection of collage masks assembled from a variety of faces. These masks are made out of a plaster of paris shell, paper and specialized glue specifically formulated for high quality collage. They are floats mounted on a custom made backing specifically designed for presenting these pieces. The masks do not have eyeholse but they can be removed from the mount and worn, holding the true nature of a mask while remaining a fine art piece designed for display. Each mask measures measure 9x12x5. All masks are titled, signed and numbered on the inside.

More about the project: These collage masks disrupt the comfort of recognition and challenge the status quo of idolatry by cutting out and reassembling the faces of well-known figures onto physical masks, the resulting artworks evoke a sense of the uncanny and strange. This deliberate departure from conventional depictions instigates a dialogue on the nature of culture, identity, and societal expectations. These masks are sometimes described as scary but they are not. They do however challenge the brain’s innate bias towards familiarity. The rearranged faces cause discomfort by defying the brain’s tendency to seek patterns in the known. This discomfort prompts viewers to reflect on their automatic fear response to the unfamiliar and highlights the relationship between perception and understanding. Furthermore these masks serve as a visual metaphor for the discomfort we feel when anything is out of place. It is through confronting this discomfort that we experience progress and change.
